The beginners courses are open to anyone who has no previous experience. Taijiquan is suitable for everyone, irrespective of age or physical condition. Wushu-kungfu is especially suitable for youngsters and is physically more demanding than taijiquan. Wushu-kungfu beginners courses start in January and August, and taijiquan courses in January, March, August and November. All beginners courses last 8 weeks. The taijiquan course covers basic techniques and the Yang style 24 movement routine. The wushu-kungfu course deals with the basic techniques of changquan, i.e. basic hand and footwork, kicks and jumps. Before the beginners courses start, the club organises an open day at the Kaapeli centre.
Comfortable loose-fitting clothes are ideal for training, such as a tracksuit and T-shirt, as well as indoor training shoes. Wushu is not done barefoot.
All training sessions begin with a gentle warm-up, stretching and kicks. Individual movements are then taught and practised, followed by the whole routine in time with music. At the end of the session there is time for more stretching.
After completing the beginners course in taijiquan, participants can continue training on the Yang 24 advanced course, and can learn the 40 and 42 movement patterns. In addition to these routines there are also two sword (jian) routines, the shorter 32 movement routine and the longer 42 movement routine. The Chen style taijiquan course covers the 56 movement competition routine and the training schedule also includes lessons for the Wu style broadsword (dao) routine. In addition to these routines, training deals with breathing exercises, push hands pairwork exercises and self-defence applications.
The Wushu-kungfu course covers both changquan routines and weapons routines (broadsword, straight sword and staff).
